O código abaixo converte uma cadeia de caracteres para um documento XML. Uma vez que você tem o documento, você pode navegar os nós ou você pode escrever para um arquivo etc.

import java.io.*;
import javax.xml.parsers.*;
import org.w3c.dom.*;
import org.xml.sax.*;

public class Util {

    public static Document stringToDom(String xmlSource)
            throws SAXException, ParserConfigurationException, IOException {
        DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
        DocumentBuilder builder = factory.newDocumentBuilder();
        return builder.parse(new InputSource(new StringReader(xmlSource)));
    }
}

public void writeFile(String yourXML){
    BufferedWriter out = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter("outfilename.xml"));
    try {
        out.write(yourXML);
    } catch (IOException e) {
        e.printStackTrace();
    } finally {
        out.close();
    }
}
